FOR THE HEN: Cut a hole in the bottom of a large pumpkin, and scoop out pulp and seeds. Trace the hen template. Use a knife to cut out the body and a pencil to lightly trace the comb. Paint comb with red acrylic paint. Tie together several strands of raffia and hot-glue in place to create the tail. Insert a piece of white chicken wire behind the hen's body, then adhere twigs with hot-glue to create legs and feet.
FORTHE CHICKS: Trace the chick template onto a smaller whole pumpkin. Use a potter's needle to indent the outline, then chisel searches out using a potter's ribbon tool. Insert a black pushpin for the eye; adhere twigs with hot-glue for the feet.

It’s time for our Monthly Flower Spotlight! This month we have chosen the beautiful Delphinium to highlight. This is a wonderful flower that has weaved its way through history and the hearts of some avid flower enthusiasts. Let’s take a look at some names, some lore, and a little bit of interesting facts about the Delphinium. What is a Delphinium?Does the name not ring a bell? That’s because it has another name. According to the website Names of Flowers, the Delphinium is a genus name that refers to a large group of perennials. The delphinium is native to the North American hemisphere where it flourishes in the late spring and the summer and produces several different colors. I have even found it in the forests of East Texas. The Delphinium is normally seen in the traditional blue, but comes in a dark purple, red, white, and yellow also. The Delphinium has some interesting folklore and myths attached to it. The flower was said to be sacred to Apollon, the god of light, healing, and poetry. Apollon is also the patron god of the city of Delphi, the city of the Oracle, and the Delphinium was known as Delphinium Apollo as it grew in the city. It is also said that goddess Persephone was gathering the flowers when she was abducted by the god of the underworld, Haides. Fun Delphinium FactsLet’s talk about some fun facts about the Delphinium. For one, did you know that it was the birth flower of the month of July? It symbolizes an open heart and has been said to offer protection against lightning and witches, it also was traditionally said to prevent eye diseases. Also, the name comes from the Greek delphis that means dolphin that steams from the curve of the flowers petals. How do Florists Use Delphinium?Since delphinium are a tall flower (what we call a line flower,) they are primarily used in tall arrangements vs low round arrangements. They can extend the lines of bouquets and enhance the visual elements. We use them daily for get well bouquets, birthday bouquets, and funeral flowers. Because of their common blue color, they are used often for flowers for men and patriotic flowers. In addition, the delphinium have several delicate blooms along the tall stem. Those individual blooms can be plucked and used in corsages and bouquets for weddings and prom flowers. The unique class of beautiful purple roses takes it to a higher level. The color purple is associated with royalty, magic, mystery, and even piety. Throughout history, wearing purple was reserved for royalty or bishops of the church. That makes purple roses a gift fit for a king or queen. Meaning of Purple RosesIn general, giving purple roses indicates a magical and enchanting love. More specifically, lavender roses signify love or enchantment at first sight, while deep purple roses mean a more enduring and deeper love. Therefore, lighter colored purple roses are appropriate for new relationships, and darker purple roses are perfect for wedding anniversaries and long-term relationships. Include a reference to the magical, enduring, or enchanting characteristics of your feelings in the card you attach to the roses. Let the recipient know that they are the king or queen of your heart. History of Purple RosesPurple roses are mentioned for the first time in the 1800s. They do not occur naturally, but rather they are a hybrid between standard European roses and a rose variety from China. Colors of purple roses range from pastel to bright to dark. They can have pink, blue, red, or gray undertones. Typical colors are lavender, lilac, and plum. Varieties of Purple RosesNames and colors of purple roses vary greatly from grower to grower. Here is some of the more common names and colors for purple roses, but please note that this can vary. Also, as rose bushes age, growers replace them with new varieties and this could also change the shade of your favorite rose. Varieties of lighter purple roses include: Cool Water, Cool Paris, Blueberry, Rock Fire, Ocean Song, Purple Haze, Amnesia, Silverston, Moody Blues, Queen of the Night, Deep Purple, Lady Moon, Nautical, and Nuage. Varieties of deep purple roses include: Midnight Blue, Burgundy Iceberg, Night Owl, Ebb Tide, Neptune, and Purple Heart. We explore that flower’s history and how we use them in our Houston flower shop daily. This September we choose the agapantha. September’s flower is known by many names – Agapantha, Lily of the Nile, and African Blue Lily just to name a few. The word Agapantha is derived from two Greek words; agape, meaning ‘love’, and anthos or athhos, meaning 'flower’. Because of this, it’s been known as the flower of love, though no one knows why it was named as such. Despite the lack of knowledge, it’s associated with all matters relating to love and romance. All About The AgapanthaThese bell-shaped flowers are native to South Africa, where they grow in clusters and are usually found in the shade provided by trees. The most common colors of the agapantha are various shades of blue and purple, though there are also white varieties. While the sap of the agapantha is suspected to be poisonous to humans, the flower is also believed to have medicinal properties – namely, it’s claimed to have anti-inflammatory, antitussive, and immunoregulatory benefits. In medicine, it’s been used to treat heart disease, chest pain and tightness, and paralysis, among other things. Agapantha have been used as protective charms, worn by pregnant women to ensure they delivered strong, healthy babies. It’s also been thought to ward off thunder, and thus worn by those who fear storms. In the past, it’s been said that growing agapantha is difficult, but this myth has been debunked. All they really need is well-drained, moderately fertile soil, and good sun. In hot climates, the flowers need partial shade, but in cooler climates, full sun is preferred for most of the day. The other thing needed for successful growth is a lot of patience, as it can take three or four years for the plants to bloom. And keep an eye on the foliage – if the tips of the leaves are yellow, it means they’re getting too much water. Flower Delivery in Houston TexasAt Enchanted Florist, our Houston Texas flower shop loves flower arrangements with agapanths in them. They are a tall flower, so traditionally they are used in tall arrangements. Agapanths also look amazing cut short in round vases grouped together like the last picture here. The agapantha flowers come in a variety of colors. The most popular color for Houston florists to get for arrangements is purple, but they also come in white and a light lavender color. These are just a few facts about the Agapantha. If you’d like to learn more, contact Enchanted Florist today. To place an order for a flower arrangement with agapanthas in it, please give us a call.
